Elgersma to Coach Blades
August 19, 2009
(Wednesday, August 19; Sioux Center, Iowa) Glenn Bouma, Dordt College Athletic Director, has announced that Bill Elgersma will be the coach of the Dordt College Blades hockey team beginning immediately.“Bill’s experience coaching young people to develop their athletic ability and Christian character makes him an excellent candidate to fill this position,” says Bouma.
Elgersma served as an assistant in the Blades’ program during the 2008-2009 season and helped the Blades to a fifth place finish at the ACHA (American Collegiate Hockey Association) Division III National Tournament. Elgersma has held a variety of positions at Dordt College including sponsor for the then student coached Blades in 1989-1990 and head coach of the women’s and men’s soccer programs where he coached the teams to a combined 159-93-17 mark. He teaches in the Dordt College English Department.
“Working with the team last year, I came to know and appreciate the team and the work ethic and selflessness they exhibited,” said Elgersma. “Beyond this, watching them grow and develop through the course of the year to end up as fifth in the nation, I saw their determination and depth. My interest is to facilitate that development and growth while they continue to serve in the community.”
Adam Jeninga, who served as an assistant in the program the last two years, will again serve as an assistant this year. Elgersma replaces Nate van Niejenhuis who stepped down from the head coaching position in July. The Blades qualified for the ACHA Division III National Tournament in 2008 and 2009.
