Origins of Hockey
Hockey is considered one of the oldest sports that have been created around 1200 years before the ancient Games at Olympia. From the Romans Arabic, Greek, used to playing an Ethiopian change the game. People play for fun, while others had an opinion that hockey warriors are better. The word “hockey” is considered the original French. Probably comes from the French Hocquet, which means that a thief pastor. The British army introduced the game of hockey in India and became one of the major sports in the country before becoming the national game of India.
History Of Indian Hockey
The first major tournament of hockey in India was Beighton Cup held in Calcutta in the year 1895 followed by the Aga Khan Cup in 1896 and since then, India has played many important and prestigious tournaments such as international games Olympic, World Cup Hockey Champions Challenge, Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, Afro-Asian Games, etc. Recently, in 2010, India hosted the World Cup of Hockey in Delhi.
India won there in the first Olympic gold in 1928 and still undisputed champion until 1956. In general, the hockey team of India has won eight Olympic gold medals – the highest among all teams with six gold medals in a row, winning 24 consecutive games between 1924 and 1956, a record likely to be broken in the future. India also won a gold medal at the World Cup, two gold and two gold medals at the Asian Games Cup Asia.
Some of the players who dominated the world of hockey for India, Dhyan Chand, Roop Singh, Balbir Singh, Indian hockey etc. Talk is incomplete without Dhyan Chand. Dhyan Chand Singh, a legendary player has won three Olympic gold medals and was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s third highest civilian award in 1956. He was the older brother of actor Roop Singh. Adolf Hitler was very impressed with its performance. Hitler supposedly offered to make Dhyan Chand a Field Marshal of the German army. But Chand refused to participate. Dhyan Chand, like many other players brought glory to Indian hockey.
Currently, the Indian hockey team is not the best, rank among the team of nine of 20, until March 15, 2010.
